The city of François, in the east of Martinique, will soon host the seventh edition of the Festival of Haute-Taille and Quadrilles of the world. This traditional dance festival will be held from the 19th to the 23rd of June in several places in the city: at the entrance of the village and at Place des Fêtes in particular. The festival will consists of dance workshops, seminars, discussions, performances, a parade and a dance open to all.
The haute-taille is one of Martinique’s traditional dances. Born in the West Indies in the late eighteenth century, haute-taille is a derivate of the two strokes Parisian waltz. It takes the basics of the waltz but also includes variations from the interbreeding of the island. The haute-taille is characterized by its syncopated rhythm and its music, mixing drum and cha-cha.
