Baignoire de Joséphine

The Baignoire de Joséphine is a fond-blanc located about 2km off the coast of Le François town in Martinique. It is one of the most paradise-like places in Martinique, popular among tourists and locals alike. Rent a car to reach the Le François marine and get on board for a memorable sea-outing.

The Baignoire de Joséphine fond-blanc is located near the coast of Le François, between  îlet Thierry and îlet Oscar. This place is accessible only by boat or by kayak, usually departing from the Le François marina. There, several companies offer half-day or full-day motor-boat tours, sail-boat tours or kayak outings etc. Once arrived at the fond-blanc, you will be able to enjoy a crystal clear water and shallow water, perfect for relaxing and observing tropical fish, starfish and corals with snorkeling gear.

The name "Baignoire de Joséphine" (Joséphine's bath) is said to come from the French Emperess Joséphine,  the Martinique-born wife of Napoleon. The legend says that the fond-blanc was her favourite swimming spot and that she used to go there regularly. Since this fact hasn't been proved by historical records, other versions exist but this one is by far the most popular and fascinating.

Most of the Baignoire de Joséphine sea-outings include apéritif : ti-punch, rhum-based cocktails or tropical fruit juice that you will drink while you enjoy a bath in the fond-blanc's clear and cool waters.
